Porcelain veneers are very thin, custom-made porcelain shells that get bonded to the surface of your teeth to improve their aesthetic appearance. At Oradell Family Dental, porcelain veneers are often an important component of our smile makeovers.

Our Oradell area cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter often recommends porcelain veneers as an ideal treatment option to correct:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Worn teeth
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth
  • Gapped teeth

How long do porcelain veneers typically last?

Porcelain veneers are expected to last for 10 years or more. Much of this depends on the care you take of your veneers. Avoid abrasive toothpaste, choose a soft-bristled toothbrush, and continue to visit the dentist every six months to help extend the life expectancy of your veneers.

Porcelain Veneer Options

Dr. Perlmutter uses Empress, E Max Press, and Procera Veneers for all of his patients. While he works with several dental labs across the country for the creation of your porcelain veneers, his primary lab of choice is Lifelike Porcelain in Nanuet, New York. Occasionally, he will work with Micro Dental and Great White in California as well.

Dr. Perlmutter feels that the choice of dental lab is crucial to the ability to deliver aesthetically pleasing and structurally reliable results. He has chosen to work with these labs because over the years, they have consistently provided excellent aesthetic results.

How are dental veneers made?

Dental veneers are made from an impression of your prepared teeth. Bergenfield cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter will first remove a very thin portion of your tooth enamel, about one eighth of an inch, and then take an impression of your teeth. He sends the impression to a specialized lab where your dental veneers are crafted out of porcelain.

Your Porcelain Veneers Procedure

You will require two office visits to complete the porcelain veneer procedure. On your first visit, Dr. Perlmutter will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel from the tooth surface. He will then take an impression of your teeth to be sent to the dental lab. The lab will use this impression to construct your porcelain veneers.

Once Dr. Perlmutter has received your veneers back from the lab, you will return to his office for bonding. Before permanently bonding your porcelain veneers to your teeth, Dr. Perlmutter will examine the fit and color, adjusting as needed to match your surrounding teeth. A bonding agent will be applied to your porcelain veneers, and Dr. Perlmutter will attach them to the surface of your teeth. A special light will activate the bonding agent, causing it to harden.

Who will design my dental veneers?

Dr. Perlmutter will design your dental veneers based on your conversations together. He can adjust the size, shape, and color of your dental veneers to create a smile you will be proud of. Dr. Perlmutter has undergone specialized training, and he has the skills to design dental veneers which, once applied, are virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth

FAQ: Porcelain Veneers and Staining

Do porcelain veneers stain?

Porcelain veneers are stain resistant, not stain-proof. However, simply brushing after every meal and snack, and visiting the every six months for professional cleanings can help keep your dental veneers bright and attractive for years to come.

Can you whiten porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers cannot be whitened. Once they are stained, dental veneers will need to be replaced in order to restore a stain-free appearance. Teeth adjacent to porcelain veneers can and should be whitened to ensure they match your veneers in shade.

Does smoking impact your veneers?

Smoking is among the worst things you can do for oral health and it’s not any better for beauty. We strongly recommend giving the habit up to reduce your risks of gum disease, oral cancer, dry mouth, and halitosis. Nicotine, smoked or vaped, will stain dental veneers.

Does smoking marijuana impact your veneers?

Unlike nicotine, cannabinoids will not stain your veneers. There is a link between marijuana use and dry mouth, an increase of plaque, and halitosis, but dental veneers themselves will likely not be impacted by cannabis use.
