When considering the aesthetics of your smile, it is important to evaluate your gum line along with the color and shape of your teeth. Just as a picture frame can enhance or detract from a painting, your gum line can play an important role in whether or not your smile looks straight and beautiful. At Oradell Family Dental, we often recommend gum recontouring to help frame your smile in the most aesthetically pleasing manner.

Gum Recontouring - Laser Dentistry Procedure

Oradell, NJ cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter performs all gum recontouring procedures with a soft tissue laser. This is a type of "cool" laser which produces very little heat and will not singe your gum tissue. Dr. Perlmutter will first discuss your aesthetic goals with you before beginning the procedure.

A topical anesthetic will be applied to your gums to prevent discomfort during the procedure, and then a soft tissue laser is used to reshape the gum line. Once the new gum line is established, the excess gum tissue is removed. The results are immediately visible, and there is usually very little swelling and discoloration.

The procedure for gum recontouring is completed in a single visit, and it usually requires little or no recovery time. If you experience gum sensitivity, you can take an over the counter anti-inflammatory medication, and you should avoid hard or crunchy food until your gums are no longer sensitive.

Uses for Gum Recontouring

Gum recontouring is often considered an important part of a smile makeover and may be recommended in conjunction with teeth whitening to produce the greatest aesthetic benefit.

You may choose to pursue gum recontouring if:

  • You are undergoing a smile makeover
  • Your gum line is uneven
  • You have a "gummy smile" (a smile that shows more gum tissue than tooth)
  • You have short teeth and an excess of gums
