Will Dental Implants Last Forever?

Woman Shrugging Shoulders and Wondering

Dental implants are made of titanium, a low-density, high-strength metal that is resistant to corrosion. They are designed to produce consistent results for a lifetime. On the surface of dental implants are several microscopic holes. When implants are placed, osteoblasts and connective tissue in the jaw insert into these holes, holding them fast in place and making them a permanent part of your smile.

Dental implants are intended to last forever, but issues like advanced gum disease can allow bone in the jaw to deteriorate and result in an implant coming loose or falling out. This, of course, has nothing to do with the longevity of the implant itself, but rather the care that is taken of the teeth and gums after the implant has been placed.

Dental Implant Restoration at Oradell Family Dental

Dr. Perlmutter offers life-like and long-lasting solutions for dental implant restoration. Depending on your specific needs, this may include a tooth-colored dental crown, dental bridge, or implant-supported denture. Which option is best for your specific needs will be dependent on factors including how many teeth are being replaced and where in the mouth implants are being inserted.

Dr. Perlmutter works closely with skilled and trusted oral surgeons to determine where and how many dental implants will be placed, enabling him to plan restorations that restore complete function and beauty to your smile.

Caring for Dental Implants

As with your natural teeth, the best way to care for your dental implants is through a proper oral hygiene routine. This should include:

  • Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to brush the teeth after every meal
  • Flossing in between every tooth twice a day
  • Avoiding sugary snacks and beverages
  • Not smoking
  • Visiting our office for biannual cleanings

It is important that you brush at least twice daily, but more often is best. It is equally important that you protect your teeth and gums in between brushing by reducing your intake of sugary foods and beverages and avoiding tobacco. Smokers are at two-times the risk for gum disease and tooth loss as non-smokers. Gum disease is one of the largest threats to both dental implants and natural teeth.

Will Dental Implant Restorations Last Forever?

Unlike dental implants, restorations are not designed to last forever. Dr. Perlmutter utilizes the strongest and most reliable materials for crowns, dental bridges, and dentures, but it may be necessary to replace your implant restorations after several years.

As with dental implants, you can help keep restorations strong and attractive by taking good care of your teeth and gums. During your routine visits to our office, we will check the integrity of your restorations, make personalized care recommendations, and help you know when it may be time to consider their replacement.
