What Sugar-Free Gum Does for Oral Health

A newly published study suggests that chewing sugar-free gum after eating can help reduce risks for cavities. And while this news is not necessarily groundbreaking, what researchers found is interesting nonetheless.

Chewing sugar-free gum immediately after eating can remove up to 100 million bacteria from the mouth. These bacteria are linked to tooth decay, gum disease, and similar oral health issues. However, chewing gum longer than 10 minutes allows all of these bacteria to be re-deposited onto teeth and gums – eliminating any benefits achieved through chewing gum in the first place.

Chewing gum can help fight cavities when used sparingly, but this does not mean it’s a good choice for everyone. If you suffer from TMJ or have certain oral health issues, even sugar-free gum may not be a good idea for you. During your routine cleanings and examinations, Dumont dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter would be happy to listen to your concerns, answer any questions you may have, and help you determine if gum chewing is a good addition to your overall oral health routine.
