What is an Abscessed Tooth?

An abscess is a collection of pus that accumulates internally around infections. An abscessed tooth occurs when the root of a tooth is infected, generally resulting from untreated tooth decay. Infection surrounding an abscessed tooth can spread to surrounding bone tissue resulting in tooth loss and other oral health problems. The only way to treat a tooth abscess is with a root canal.

Bergenfield dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter uses advanced technology to ensure the root canal procedure is both comfortable and effective. However, if you are nervous about the idea of a root canal we would be happy to discuss sedation dentistry options prior to your procedure.

Symptoms of an Abscessed Tooth

The most common symptoms of an abscessed tooth are consistent toothache or dull throbbing within the tooth. This may be accompanied by other symptoms such as:

  • Swollen or red gum tissue around a tooth
  • Tooth pain while chewing
  • A bad taste in the mouth or bad breath that fails to respond to brushing
  • Changes in tooth color
  •  Drainage from the gums

These symptoms may indicate an abscess tooth, gum disease, or another serious oral health concern and should be brought to the attention of our experienced dentist as soon as they occur.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of an abscessed tooth in Bergenfield or surrounding areas of New Jersey, please contact Dumont Cosmetic Dental today to schedule an examination with Dr. Perlmutter.
