What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a direct result of tartar and plaque being allowed to build up below the gum line. Your mouth is filled with bacteria that secrete acids as they break down consumables such as sugars and carbohydrates. Plaque holds these acids fast to your teeth. When not removed quickly, plaque hardens into tartar, which can be nearly impossible to remove on your own.

If you are suffering from any of the symptoms of gum disease, please contact Dumont Cosmetic Dental or call 201-384-9292 to schedule an appointment with Bergenfield dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter.

Preventing Gum Disease

The most effective way to prevent gum disease is through a consistent dental hygiene routine. This should include:

  • Brushing your teeth with a soft bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste after every meal and snack
  • Flossing in between every tooth from tip to below the gum line at least once a day
  • Avoiding highly sugary foods and beverages
  • Visiting our Dumont, New Jersey office twice a year for professional cleanings

Your visits to our office serve the dual purpose of allowing us to remove tartar and plaque from below the gum line and allowing Dr. Perlmutter to detect early signs of gum disease. When caught early on, simple treatments are often very effective at eliminating bacteria and preventing serious oral health issues.

Please contact our experienced Bergenfield dentist to schedule your dental cleaning today. Dr. Perlmutter serves people throughout Bergen County from our office in Dumont.
