The Oral Cancer Foundation anticipates 48,250 new cases of oral cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year. More than 8,700 people lose their lives to this disease on a yearly basis. 80% of oral cancer patients are current or former tobacco users. 70% of new oral cancer cases occur in people who drink excessive amounts of alcohol. This means that lifestyle choices, more than anything else, are the biggest risks for developing oral cancer.

If you are a current or former tobacco user or if you consume more than two alcoholic beverages every day, routine screenings should be a part of your annual healthcare services. Some screening is done during your biannual visits to our Oradell Family Dental office, but if you are at higher risk advanced forms of screening may be more effective. There is some evidence that a good oral hygiene routine can help prevent oral cancer or at least reduce risks. Making sure to brush after every meal and floss twice a day can, at the least, prevent oral health issues that may contribute to or exacerbate oral cancer symptoms, while also helping to keep your teeth and gums strong and healthy.
