Gum Disease and Pregnancy

If you are experiencing signs of gum disease during pregnancy, call Oradell Family Dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter at (201) 384-9292 to schedule an evaluation todayHormonal changes during pregnancy make gums more sensitive to the bacteria in plaque that can cause gum disease. Due to this, it is estimated that near 50% of expectant mothers will experience a mild form of gum disease – known as pregnancy gingivitis – at some point.

Pregnancy gingivitis shows the same symptoms as other mild forms of gum disease, namely:

  • Red or swollen gum tissue
  • Gums that bleed easily when brushed

If you are experiencing symptoms of gum disease during pregnancy, please call Oradell family dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter at 201-384-9292 to schedule an evaluation. Allowed to progress, pregnancy gingivitis can give way to periodontitis, which is linked to complications including premature birth and low birth weight.

Treating Pregnancy Gingivitis

As with all gum disease, your best defense is a good offense. If you begin to develop symptoms of pregnancy gingivitis, it is important that you step-up your daily oral hygiene routine. Make sure you are brushing your teeth with a soft bristled tooth brush after every meal and snack. Every single one. Floss both morning and night, and consider using an antibacterial mouthwash twice a day. You may also wish to discuss the use of probiotics with your doctor. There is significant evidence that these beneficial bacteria are useful in both the prevention and treatment of gum disease.

If these steps fail to produce desirable results, please contact Oradell Family Dental to schedule a treatment evaluation with Dr. Perlmutter. We welcome women from all areas of Bergen County.
