Dumont Preventive Dentistry Questions: How Important is Flossing?

Flossing is an important part of your dental hygiene routine and perhaps one of the most effective ways to prevent issues such as gum disease. By removing plaque and food particles from in between teeth, flossing helps prevent tooth decay as well as plaque buildup below the gum line, and is not something that should be overlooked.

Dr. Howard Perlmutter recommends flossing morning and night for optimal results. If you are not certain how to floss we would be happy to provide instruction during your regularly scheduled preventive dentistry appointments.

But I Use Mouthwash….

Some people mistakenly believe that gargling with an antimicrobial or antiseptic mouthwash is a suitable alternative to flossing. This simply is not true. Gargling has been shown to reduce instances of gum disease, but it cannot remove plaque and food particles from in between teeth any better than brushing alone.

Adding a mouthwash to your daily routine can help freshen breath, but there is no replacement for flossing. Dr. Perlmutter can discuss this with you in more detail and answer any questions you may have during your regularly scheduled appointments at our comfortable Dumont office.
