Causes of Cavities

Cavities are the result of tooth decay, in which your tooth enamel (the hard outer layer of a tooth) and dentin (the inner layer of the tooth) are gradually destroyed.

Tooth decay is caused by the remnants of fermentable carbohydrates that linger on your teeth. Fermentable carbohydrates are found in a wide range of foods and drinks that are high in sugar and/or starch.

The particles from these foods and drinks are converted into acids by naturally occurring bacteria that reside in your mouth. In combination with your saliva, these food particles, bacteria and acids form plaque. As plaque coats your teeth, it begins to progressively dissolve the enamel, eventually eroding through the enamel to the dentin.

The best way to avoid cavities is to limit foods and drinks high in sugars and carbohydrates, and to practice a good dental hygiene routine.

Proper dental care includes brushing your teeth at least twice every day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. You should also floss after brushing at least once a day to remove food particles that cling to hard-to-reach places.

It is also important to visit Haworth, New Jersey, dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter at least twice every year for thorough check-ups and professional teeth cleaning. These exams are an opportunity to address tooth decay in the early stages before it leads to more severe oral health problems.

If you would like to schedule your regular check-up, please contact Dumont Cosmetic Dental to schedule your appointment with Dr. Howard Perlmutter. We welcome patients from the Dumont, Bergenfield, Paramus, Haworth and Bergen County, New Jersey, areas.
