Advice from Your Dumont Family Dentist: How and When to Brush Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth is the foundation of maintaining optimal dental hygiene. However, simply passing a toothbrush over your teeth for a few seconds every day is not nearly enough to prevent issues such as tooth decay and gum disease. Fortunately, brushing your teeth correctly is not at all difficult, and the effort you take each day will go a long way in keeping your smile clean, bright, and looking good.

Proper Brushing

Dumont family dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter recommends using toothpaste with fluoride to strengthen teeth and help prevent cavities. A soft bristled toothbrush is preferable as well, as it will prevent unnecessary damage to your tooth enamel. Some toothpastes are not good for dental restorations. During your regularly scheduled family dentistry visits Dr. Perlmutter will advise you on the best toothpaste for your needs.

The front, top, and back of teeth should be brushed after every meal. To get the best oral hygiene you can brush after every snack as well, but this is not entirely necessary. Depending on the type of toothbrush you use, one to two minutes each time you brush will be necessary to thoroughly clean teeth. Dr. Perlmutter will be happy to show you proper brushing technique and discuss brushing duration during your visits to our Dumont dental office.
