Questions about Dental Veneers

Oradell Dentist Serving Bergenfield, Dumont, and Oradell, New Jersey

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers, also called porcelain veneers, are very thin pieces of porcelain which are placed over the front of your prepared teeth to give them the appearance of a different shape, size, and color. Dental veneers are very durable and share a similar translucence to tooth enamel, making them virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth if correctly made.

What can dental veneers correct?

Dental veneers are most commonly used to correct misshapen or oddly sized teeth, but they may also be used to treat discolored or crooked teeth. However, dental veneers are not an effective treatment for tooth decay. If your tooth has suffered extensive decay or damage, a tooth crown may be recommended instead of a dental veneer.

How are dental veneers made?

Dental veneers are made from an impression of your prepared teeth. Bergenfield cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter will first remove a very thin portion of your tooth enamel, about one eighth of an inch, and then take an impression of your teeth. He sends the impression to a specialized lab where your dental veneers are crafted out of porcelain.

Who will design my dental veneers?

Dr. Perlmutter will design your dental veneers based on your conversations together. He can adjust the size, shape, and color of your dental veneers to create a smile you will be proud of. Dr. Perlmutter has undergone specialized training, and he has the skills to design dental veneers which, once applied, are virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

How long will my dental veneers last?

It is impossible to accurately determine the life span of your dental veneers since many factors, including how diligently you care for them, affect how long they will last. However, dental veneers are a highly durable restoration, and if you maintain good dental hygiene practices, it is likely they will last at least ten years.

How should I care for my dental veneers?

You can care for your dental veneers in the same way that you care for your natural teeth, by maintaining good dental hygiene, having regular dental checkups, and semi-annual dental cleanings.
